Why Choose a Nursing Career in Long-Term Care: A Wesbury Perspective

For more than a century, Wesbury has been a place where compassion, dignity, and purpose come together for both our residents and our team. Our nursing staff plays a vital role in that mission every day.

In long-term care, nursing is about more than clinical care. It’s about relationships. Nurses and caregivers become trusted, familiar faces in residents’ lives, learning their routines, listening to their stories, and noticing the small changes that matter most.

These everyday moments are what make the work so meaningful. They’re also what make long-term care such a rewarding place to build a nursing career.

If you’re considering a future in healthcare or wondering what makes nursing at Wesbury special—hear directly from some of our nursing team.

Jackie DeRemer, LPN

I love my job. I knew from a young age that I wanted to be a nurse, and at 22, I decided to take that step and enroll in a Licensed Practical Nursing program. I’ve been part of the Wesbury family since 2022. At one point, I left because I thought the grass might be greener somewhere else. But after just four months, I realized how wrong I was. When I came back, Wesbury welcomed me with open arms and gave me the comfort and stability I needed during a really tough time in my life.

Coming back to Wesbury felt like coming home. It’s one of my safe places.

What truly makes Wesbury special is the support…support from leadership, from my coworkers, and from the residents and their families. The connections I’ve built here mean everything to me. I feel incredibly blessed to be part of these relationships.

We work as a team here. No matter which neighborhood I’m on, I know I’m never alone. There’s always someone ready to help, to listen, or to step in, and we even manage to have fun along the way. Those moments turn into memories I’ll always carry with me.

Of course, there are hard days. But it’s the good days that make it all worth it. They make me a better person, a better nurse, and they add so much value to my life and my relationships. People say the grass is greener on the other side, but I’ve learned the grass grows where you stay and water it.

Jeanette Osbourne, CNA

I became a CNA more than 25 years ago because life changed me. After losing my husband, I was raising three young children on my own. A few years later, my mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and I found myself caring for her, too. That’s when I realized something—I had patience, compassion, and a heart for caring for others.

When I saw the Certified Nurse’s Aide class offered at Wesbury, I took a leap of faith to become a Certified Nurse Aide. 25 years later, I am still at Wesbury and I love my job. I love the conversations, the smiles, the laughter, the hugs…all of it.

Every Wesbury resident is someone’s mom, dad, grandparent, or loved one, and I treat them the way I’d want my own family treated. I love making sure residents know they are cared for and valued. And yes, I love the teamwork and support from my coworkers. This job isn’t always easy, but the good moments far outweigh the hard ones. And I can honestly say… I made the right decision to become a CNA at Wesbury.

Angie Wheeler, CNA

My very first job was working at a local nursing home, helping during evening meals. After high school, I thought my path was education, so I became an elementary school aide. I did that for a few years—but deep down, it never felt quite right for me. Taking care of others was always in the back of my mind.

When I saw that Wesbury was accepting applicants for their Certified Nurse Aide program, I took a chance and applied. That was 17 years ago—and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. What I love most about being a CNA at Wesbury are the relationships. The connections with residents, hearing their life stories, and being able to support them with dignity and compassion—it’s incredibly meaningful work.

I love my coworkers. This work isn’t easy, but we lift each other up, learn from one another, and truly work as a team. Wesbury supports your growth, encourages you to keep learning, and gives you opportunities to build a career. At Wesbury, every shift is an opportunity to make a difference, build lasting connections, and grow both professionally and personally. Here, it’s more than a job. It’s a calling, a community, and a place where what you do truly matters.
