Healing and Hope at Wesbury: A Faith-Based Approach to Senior Care

Founded in 1918 as a ministry of the Methodist Church, Wesbury has a long and proud tradition of caring for seniors through a faith-based lens. For over a century, spirituality has been nurtured within this community, where residents experience a deep sense of belonging, comfort, and care. This foundation in faith is central to the care provided at Wesbury, making it not just a place to live but a sanctuary where both physical and spiritual well-being are nurtured.

At Wesbury, the daily life of the Spirit is active and vibrant. Residents come together for weekly chapel services, Bible studies, and to receive the sacraments. Seasonal worship services and choir performances are woven into the rhythms of campus life, making faith an integral part of the experience. Every day begins with a prayer over the intercom, acknowledging God’s goodness and grace, offering a peaceful and spiritual start for both residents and staff alike

While local churches often focus on specific theological beliefs tied to their denominational identity, the chaplain’s role in a healthcare setting like Wesbury is distinctly different. Here, residents come from a wide variety of religious backgrounds, belief systems, and life experiences. This diversity can create unique challenges for providing spiritual care.

As Chaplain Sam explains, “When we experience changes in life or face a crisis, it can cause us to ask difficult questions. We may even wrestle with doubt or question our faith. In moments like these, a chaplain’s job is not only to provide comfort but also to meet individuals where they are on their spiritual journey, helping them navigate the challenges they face and find peace and meaning.”

A chaplain’s role in a healthcare setting is one of respect and inclusivity. According to the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC) Common Code of Ethics, professional chaplains are required to demonstrate respect for the cultural and religious values of those they serve, refraining from imposing their own beliefs.

As such, a Board-Certified chaplain undergoes specialized training, including Clinical Pastoral Education, which equips them to offer care in a pluralistic setting and to communicate as a member of the medical team. A professional chaplain is trained to conduct spiritual assessments to understand each resident’s spiritual history, hopes, needs, and resources. This personalized approach ensures that care is meaningful and respectful of each person’s spiritual life, offering the right kind of support when it’s needed most.

Healing at Wesbury extends beyond physical health—it encompasses emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being. As Chaplain Sam shares, “Healing may or may not be an improvement in one’s physical health, but the healing of the soul is the ability to look in all directions of one’s life: their relationship with God, their relationship with others, and their relationship with themselves and find peace.”

At Wesbury, the commitment to providing holistic care that addresses both the physical and spiritual needs of residents remain steadfast. As part of our mission, Wesbury offers a healing environment where seniors can find peace, purpose, and hope.
