Isabel Shelatz is our Wesbury Volunteer of the Month for September. Isabel is 17 years old and a student at Conneaut Area Senior High. She will be going into her senior year this fall. Isabel plans to attend Rochester Institute of Technology to major in Environmental Science with a public policy concentration. She has an older brother and sister, and lives with her mom and dad. When she’s not volunteering at Wesbury, Isabel works at Casey’s Ice Cream and Candies.
When she started applying to colleges Isabel saw volunteering as an opportunity to enhance her resume, but as she began volunteering she quickly saw that there was more to it than just building up the hours. Isabel lends a helping hand transporting residents around the building, assists with activities, and supports the Wesbury Stylists in the Grace and Cribbs Beauty Shops with small jobs and organization. Her favorite part is being able to talk to the regulars at the beauty shop and bonding with the residents.
When asked if she feels rewarded by the volunteer work she does, Isabel said, “I definitely think that volunteering was a rewarding opportunity because I feel as if this was an opportunity that will have a lifelong impact in my life. I believe that volunteering helped me overcome my nervousness with interacting with elderly people, since I never had the opportunity to do so in my life before.”
